Port of Biganos

History of the Port of Biganos

Located in the heart of the forest, the port of Biganos was built in the 19th century to meet the needs of the oyster industry. It was then modernised in the 20th century to accommodate pleasure boats.

A colourful port

This small port is renowned for the colourful architecture of its huts. Originally, they were built using wood salvaged from shipwrecks and branches. As the industry developed (particularly oyster farming) and fishermen settled down, they were gradually rebuilt using pine, although in some places you can still see a few huts built from odds and ends.

What we liked

This small port has retained its authentic character, far from the commercial hype of other ports in the basin. Some of the huts are still inhabited. Here, it is still possible to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Arcachon Bay.
